History of Katrina Trask
Kate Nichols was born on May 30th, 1853, in Brooklyn, New York.
In November 1874, Kate married Spencer Trask. He was a Wall Street banker, a philanthropist, and was responsible for the resurrection of the New York Times in 1896.
Kate was a talented poet and writer. She was published in 1892, first anonymously, then under her pen name “Katrina Trask”.
Kate and Spencer experienced many losses while on their sprawling estate. Two of their children died of diphtheria in 1888. Their last child died only twelve days after birth in August 1889.
With the passing of all her children, Katrina was concerned about the future of Yaddo. Katrina and
Spencer decided to bequeath their estate to Saratoga Springs. It was to be maintained as an artists retreat. In 1900 Yaddo was opened as a haven for aspiring writers, artists, poets, and musicians. Here their creative energy could flow without disruption of the outside world. Today, artists of many kinds still find their inspiration there.
Although Katrina Trask passed in January of 1922, her spirit lives on in Yaddo.
