In 1880 she made her introduction in Tony Pastor’s Variety Theater which launched her career as “The American Beauty”. By November of that year she appeared on Broadway for the first time. In 1891 Lillian even founded her own opera company. The Lillian Russell Company.

Though her career flourished, her private life suffered. She married her first husband, orchestra leader Harry Graham, after only knowing him for two weeks. After the death of their infant boy they divorced. Her second husband, Edward Solomon, was a composer. They had a daughter named Dorothy, but the relationship ended he was arrested for bigamy. Her third marriage to singer Giovanni Peruini also ended in divorce after only six months.

Lillian Russell’s most talked about relationship was with Diamond Jim Brady. The couple never married but spent much of their leisure time together. One of their favorite places to get away was Saratoga Springs where they could enjoy the gambling and elite social setting.

In 1912 Lillian Russell married her fourth husband, Alexander Pollock Moore. She also retired from the stage due to her deteriorating voice. In the latter years of her life Lillian was a newspaper columnist, a lecturer, and an advocate of woman suffrage. She also recruited for the Marine Corps and was a special investigator on immigration under President Harding.
