History of Richard Canfield
Richard Canfield was born in New Bedford Massachusetts in 1865. Richard was a well known gambling operator in Providence Rhode Island.
In the 1880’s Canfield left for Saratoga Springs, New York. In 1894 he purchased the Saratoga Club-House, the building now known as the Canfield Casino. From here he ran a world renowned casino.
Richard Canfield made many beautiful renovations to the building that can still be seen today. He added the Tiffany window on the west wall. He is also responsible for purchasing north and east of the building to create the Italian Gardens. In 1903 he also added a magnificent dining room that features a stained glass zodiac in the vaulted ceiling.
The casino was closed in 1904 due to anti-gambling pressures. The city reopened the casino in 1911 as a place for drinking spring water, smoking, reading and relaxation.
Richard Canfield died in 1914, although his influences on Saratoga can still be seen at the Canfield Casino in Congress Park.
